Student team earns 2015 national recognition for efforts to defeat the cycle of debt and financial burden
TORONTO, ONTARIO (May 11, 2105) – College of the North Atlantic – St John’s has been awarded the 2015 Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership Best Project by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud supporter Genworth Canada. The award presentation took place at the 2015 Enactus Canada National Exposition today in Toronto.
Their project, Independent You, targeted youth in rural and isolated Newfoundland communities, equipping students with the tools and resources to become financially independent, responsible adults.
“Our goal this year was to leverage the innovative spirits and bright minds of Enactus students to help identify new ways of promoting financial literacy among Canadian youth”, said Stuart Levings, CEO and President of Genworth Canada. “We believe that greater understanding of personal finances at a young age leads to a more financially secure adulthood and encourage all teams to pursue their programs, each of which provides new and creative ways of incorporating financial education into today’s school curriculum.”
The Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership was designed to empower student teams with the skills and resources to strengthen the financial well-being of youth in communities across Canada.
“Financial education is a growing issue across the country and we are proud to recognize the Enactus College of the North Atlantic – St John’s team for their work to empower youth,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “With the support of corporate partners like Genworth Canada, our students are demonstrating how financial education can make a difference in the lives of Canadians.”
The Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership Best Project was awarded at the 2015 Enactus Canada National Exposition, where more than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs came together to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.
