(TORONTOMay 10 2021: Students from Fleming College have created Paper Planet – a social enterprise which diverts paper from their college’s waste streams and turns them into profit. They developed a Paper Planter Kit designed to teach elementary school children the basics about biodegradable practices, gardening and nutritional literacy.

Their efforts were recognized on May 10th at the 2021 Enactus Canada National Exposition Opening Ceremony, wherthey won the title, Scotiabank Climate Action Project Accelerator Best Project, for Paper Planet.

This year, Paper Planet prevented 1667 pounds of CO2 from entering the Earth’s atmosphere by diverting 387 pounds of paper. They sold 45 kits, making over $500 in revenue and impacting over 350 people. The children and their families were able to use the kits to successfully learn about growing their own food, the circular economy and affordable sustainability.

It is truly inspiring to see the ideas and innovations put forth by all of the students participating in the Scotiabank Climate Action Project Accelerator,” said Sandra OdendahlVice President of Social Impact and Sustainability at Scotiabank. “Their efforts demonstrate that together, we can tackle the impacts of climate change by transitioning to a low-carbon, more resilient and prosperous future. Scotiabank continues to make progress on its own comprehensive strategy to address climate risks and opportunities through its Climate Commitments. Among them, the Bank has pledged to mobilize $100 billion by 2025 to reduce the impacts of climate change, with over $28 billion mobilized to date.”

The Scotiabank Climate Action Project Accelerator is designed to empower Enactus teams with the resources needed to identify, create and deliver projects that teach and empower others to take action to tackle climate change and its impacts.
