Paul ShumlichCALGARY, ALBERTA (March 7, 2016) – Paul Shumlich, owner of Deepwater Farms and student at Mount Royal University, has been named Western Canada’s 2016 Student Entrepreneur Regional Champion. Regional Champions in Western Canada were named by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud program supporter, the John Dobson Foundation as part of the Student Entrepreneur National Competition.

Deepwater Farms specializes in developing aquaponic technology and bringing the freshest food to market year round. Aquaponics is a different way of growing food. The plants it produces grow out of water instead of soil. The nutrients they need are derived from fish waste, not fertilizers.

“I had an issue with not knowing where my food came from and who was growing it, so I began looking into better ways of growing food.” said Shumlich. “Aquaponics is 100% sustainable and produces zero waste.”

This title allows Shumlich to showcase his business and personal accomplishments on the national stage at the Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto on May 3, 2016, where he will compete for the title of Student Entrepreneur National Champion.

Shumlich will now compete against five other Student Entrepreneur Regional Champions from across Canada for the national title, a $10,000 cash prize and the John Dobson Cup.
