(TORONTO) 14 May 2018: A team of students in Halifax have created a franchise model selling imperfect produce at reduced prices through a monthly subscription.

The team was rewarded on Monday, May 14 at the 2018 Enactus Canada National Exposition, where they took home the award for BDC Project Accelerator Best Project for their initiative, Square Roots.

In the last year, Square Roots has expanded across the province, empowering 10 franchise owners to deliver over 30,000 lbs of imperfect produce to nine communities in need, connecting people who are food insecure with food that would otherwise have gone to waste.

“At BDC, we help entrepreneurs take their business further… and that’s exactly what Enactus Saint Mary’s has done through Square Roots,” says Michel Bergeron, Senior Vice President Marketing and Public Affairs,at BDC. “Our Enactus partnership allows us to help develop the next generation of business leaders that will help shape Canada’s future.”

The BDC Project Partnership, launched in 2011, is designed to empower Enactus teams with the skills and resources to make a meaningful difference in their communities through entrepreneurship.

The 2018 Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
