Tariq HeadshotEDMONTON, ALBERTA (February 16, 2016) – Tariq Bakir owner of Bakir Exterior Painting. and student at the University of Alberta has been named Enactus Canada’s 2016 Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion for Alberta. Provincial Champions coast to coast were named today by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud program supporter, the John Dobson Foundation as part of the Student Entrepreneur National Competition.

Bakir received the title of Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion because he uses his business as a medium for personal development and as an opportunity to develop others. Bakir Exterior Painting has had tremendous success as a residential and commercial contracting business focusing on interior and exterior painting services that offers additional services such as drywall repair, stucco and ceiling repair, light carpentry, etc. Last year alone, Bakir employed four people and subcontractors.

Bakir has since rebranded his business as Bakir Contracting Corp. and currently employs three marketers and part time painters with projections for expansion in the summer.

Tariq and his crew“Alberta has a strong need for entrepreneurs to diversify the economy and maintain workflow and employment,” said Bakir. “For me to be recognized as one of the top entrepreneurs in the province is very inspiring and motivating.”

Bakir will showcase both his business and personal accomplishments as an entrepreneur at the Enactus Canada Regional Exposition – Western Canada in Calgary on March 4, where he will compete for the title of Student Entrepreneur Regional Champion.

“Tariq is an incredibly hard-working young business owner,” explains Enactus Canada president Nicole Almond. “Entrepreneurial spirit like his built this country and we want to encourage and celebrate this in young leaders across Canada.”

Bakir will compete against three additional Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champions from Western Canada for the regional title and the chance to move on to the 2016 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto, Ontario taking place May 2-4. The National Champion will receive a $10,000 cash prize and take home the John Dobson Cup.
