(VANCOUVER) 7 May 2019: Students at the University of Calgary have created a social enterprise that helps create meaningful employment for people of First Nation communities through beekeeping and fruit-bearing orchard operations.

The Enactus Calgary team won the 2019 HSBC Entrepreneurs Project Accelerator Best Project award at the 2019 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Vancouver.

The team has helped five individuals launch beekeeping businesses, selling their honey at farmers markets and local stores.

“At HSBC we are committed to supporting the communities we serve, and helping young people develop the skills needed to secure long-term prosperity for all,” says Kim Flood, Senior Vice President and Head of Communications, HSBC Bank Canada. “The work Enactus Calgary has done to help entrepreneurs in their community grow sustainably is inspiring.”

Launched this year, the HSBC Entrepreneurs Project Accelerator empowers Enactus teams by providing the resources needed to identify, create and deliver projects that accelerate the advancement of Indigenous people creating social and economic opportunities.

The 2019 Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
