Second Plate from Northeastern University – Toronto Wins Alterna Savings SDG Project Accelerator Best Project Award

Second Plate, a social enterprise from Enactus Northeastern University – Toronto, has won the 2026 Alterna Savings SDG Project Accelerator Best Project Award.

Second Plate is a food rescue platform that connects customers with discounted surplus meals from local restaurants. Through this initiative, they are reducing food waste and improving food accessibility and budget-friendly options in their local community. Since launching, the team has diverted 177.4 kg of food waste and rescued over 500 meals.

“Second Plate shows us what’s possible when innovation meets community need. By connecting people with affordable, quality meals while reducing food waste, this team is creating real impact where it matters most,” said Rachel Osborne, Vice President, Marketing and Communications. “This is a great example of the type of purpose-driven work Alterna is proud to support through the SDG Project Accelerator.”

Back for its second year, the Alterna Savings SDG Project Accelerator continues to equip Ontario-based Enactus teams to design, launch and scale innovative social enterprises that address at least one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Six projects were awarded $2,500 grants, impacting over 3,713 individuals and driving real social, economic and environmental change in their communities throughout the province.
