Ryerson University team to represent Canada at Enactus World Cup in Mexico
TORONTO, ON (May 8, 2013) – Ryerson University has been named the 2013 Enactus National Champion by charitable organization Enactus Canada and a 58 person judging panel comprised of top Canadian CEOs, for their ability to enable social, environmental and economic progress through entrepreneurial action.
The team from Ryerson University took home the Tim Hortons Cup at the 2013 Enactus Canada National Exposition in recognition of the impact made at home and abroad through a variety of community development projects, which are empowering individuals from Toronto to Dago, Kenya through financial literacy and entrepreneurship workshops.
“Championing and empowering young people is as important to Tim Hortons as it is with our Tim Horton Children’s Foundation, which shares so many key values with Enactus,” said David Blackmore, Senior Vice President, Ontario. “Tim Hortons is proud to support Enactus and the entrepreneurial spirits of the young Canadians participating in this competition. We wish them continued success as they make a true difference in their own lives and in that of their communities.”
Enactus Ryerson stood victorious by empowering over 800 young, urban mothers, disadvantaged youth and impoverished African villagers to become financially independent, self-sustaining members of society. Another project educated 10 local farmers on the environmental benefits of bee keeping and honey production. This carbon neutral business has resulted in 10 new jobs, increased crop yields and an empowered Kenyan community.
“The Ryerson team greatly improved the quality of life for individuals at home and abroad by creating and implementing innovative and forward-thinking projects,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “We are eager to see Ryerson University compete and represent Canada at the Enactus World Cup.”
The National Champion team will take home the Tim Hortons Cup and advance to represent Canada at the Enactus World Cup taking place in Mexico from September 29 to October 1, 2013. There, student teams from 38 countries will compete for the ultimate title of Enactus World Cup Champion.
More than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top business leaders witnessed the crowning of the National Champion at the 2013 Enactus Canada National Exposition held from May 6-8th in Toronto.
