Seeing Opportunity
In the community surrounding Simon Fraser University, over 11,000 single mothers live in poverty. The roots of poverty surround access to education, and one of its results is malnutrition.
Enactus Simon Fraser tackled these difficult and complex issues head on by developing Hunger Actions, a comprehensive four week program that consists of two educational workshops and live cooking tutorials
Taking Action
Offering both nutrition and financial education, the team successfully partnered with four non-profit organizations and community centres to deliver the program.
Hunger Actions shares the tools and knowledge needed to become more financially secure, and also teaches participants how to provide their families with nutritious food on a limited budget.
Enabling Progress
Through the commitment of 25 student volunteers and nearly 7,000 volunteer hours, this program helped participants save over $27,000. This year, Hunger Actions gave 65 families in the Vancouver and Surrey area tangible strategies to create positive, lasting change in their lives. On average, families were able to save $125 a month.
