Seeing Opportunity
While the Canadian crime rate has steadily declined, the federal prison population is at the highest it’s ever been with 67% of inmates reoffending. Driven by a visible lack of inmate training to aid reintegration into society post-release, Enactus Saint Mary’s created OPtions Nova.
Taking Action
In partnership with the Nova Institute for Women in Truro, Nova Scotia, the team piloted a financial literacy, marketing and entrepreneurship program, while also providing mentorship opportunities for support upon release. Through OPtions Nova, inmates are empowered to reintegrate feeling comfortable and confident in the workforce, despite the stigma and impact of their past.
Enabling Progress
All OPtions Nova participants found employment or returned to school within six weeks of release. With none of the participants reoffending, the pilot program is beating the national recidivism rate of 67% and saving taxpayers $1,000,000.
