(TORONTO) September 11, 2020 – The Enactus Canada team from Wilfrid Laurier University – Waterloo was named Enactus World Cup 2020 runner-up and awarded $25,000USD.
Team Canada competed in the Final 4 as they presented their projects virtually to a panel of business executives on a global scale. Egypt was named the Global Champion with India and Brazil rounding out the top four teams.
“We’re so incredibly proud of the work done by Enactus Laurier as they represented Team Canada on a global scale.” said Nicole Almond, president, Enactus Canada. “To be named World Cup Runner-Up and 1 Race 4 Oceans Winner is an exemplary showcase of the brilliant projects that come out of our network.”
They presented the impact of their project, Earthsuds – a social enterprise that aims to help eliminate single-use plastic, but more specifically, the plastic used in bathroom amenity bottles.
The team employs people with development disabilities to produce single-use tablets of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash that dissolve upon contact with water to be used like normal liquid soaps. This year, they’ve eliminated over 13,000 plastic bottles and have educated 710 people on plastic reduction and sustainable living. Fifty-five retailers now carry EarthSuds and over 2,750 people use their products.
The Enactus team from Wilfrid Laurier University – Waterloo was also named winner of the 1 Race 4 Oceans challenge – a competition within Enactus World Cup that recognizes and rewards teams for generating a sustainable, positive impact on ocean challenges.
“Working with the Enactus Laurier team over the past few years has been nothing short of awe-inspiring,” says Laura Allan, Enactus Laurier Faculty Advisor. “These students are true leaders that can’t help but give you a lot of hope for the future. They are using their skills to make a positive change in the world and are making real impact to create a better normal. They definitely made Laurier and Canada proud!”
The championship ceremony took place virtually on Friday, September 11, 2020, wrapping up three days of competition, collaboration and learning events. Enactus World Cup is the signature event for Enactus, a global non-profit with more than 72,000 student members from 36 countries across 1,700+ university campuses.
Enactus Global also announced that the Enactus World Cup will take place in Utrecht, Netherlands in 2021.
