(TORONTO) 7 May 2019: Enactus students at Western University have created a social enterprise that partners with local farmers to source overstocked and imperfect produce, to be sold online in a fully customizable weekly food subscription box to households in the London, Ontario area. This year, they have diverted 400,000 pounds of food waste through their steady customer base of over 800 subscribers.
Enactus Western University has been awarded the 2019 Hellmann’s Real Food Rescue Best Project title by Unilever Canada’s Hellmann’s brand at the 2019 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto.
“Canada wastes $31 billion worth of food every year,” says Karlee Sommerfeld, Brand Manager, Hellmann’s, Unilever Canada. “We are proud to work with Enactus to support the innovative thinking that helps increase communities’ access to healthier, more affordable and sustainable food sources. Together, we’re changing lives.”
The Hellmann’s Real Food Rescue was designed to recognize and reward Enactus teams that address food insecurity, while creating social and economic opportunities that will strengthen the well-being of communities. Four teams have been selected to receive $15,000 in total funding.
The 2019 Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
