(MONTREAL, QC) May 1, 2023 – A team of students from the University of Saskatchewan created an initiative that helps make life a little more vibrant while reducing restaurant waste.

The Enactus University of Saskatchewan team won the 2023 Scotiabank Climate Action Project Accelerator Best Project award for their project, Re-Colour, and was recognized today at the Enactus Canada National Exposition Opening Ceremony.

Re-Colour collects discarded crayons from restaurant chains to create kits, including new upcycled crayons in fun shapes, which are donated to schools, daycares, and crisis shelters to teach children about sustainable practices. The project has diverted 2,770 crayons from landfills this year, reducing waste and GHG emissions

“Enactus University of Saskatchewan’s project inspires us to see how we can take action and contribute to a more sustainable Canada,” said Maria Saros, Vice President and Global Head, Social Impact at Scotiabank. “We are proud to work with Enactus Canada and its network to achieve a more sustainable future for all.”

The Scotiabank Climate Action Project Accelerator is designed to empower Enactus teams with the resources needed to identify, create and deliver projects that tackle climate change and its impacts through the concept of circularity, while teaching and empowering others to do the same.

The Enactus Canada National Exposition is an annual three-day event that unites hundreds of delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals, and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
