(TORONTOMay 10 2021: Students at Fleming College launched Paddy Waste – an initiative that encourages farmers in India to switch from burning paddy rice waste to collecting and selling it instead.

Their efforts were recognized on May 10th at the 2021 Enactus Canada National Exposition Opening Ceremony, where the Enactus Fleming College team won the Jeanne Sauvé Global Project Accelerator Best Project award for their project Paddy Waste to Income.

Paddy Waste to Income has already partnered with an Enactus Team in India from Thapar University and has contacted 50 farmers, while directly impacting 30 farmers in the Punjab region of India. They have negotiated with different buyers where they can sell the stubble waste and create multiple clusters to help process larger volumes when the harvest season is in place. They continue to work along with the Enactus team from Thapar University to develop their primary cluster in the village of Sirsa, which will be able to process a minimum of 300 tonnes of paddy waste.

We are extremely proud to support this initiative anpresent this award to this hard-working and inspirational team today. Their project is having concrete impact both in Canada and abroad and working to make the world a better place. It would make the late Right Honourable Former Governor General Jeanne Sauvé extremely proud.” says Diane SauvéPresident, The Jeanne Sauvé Foundation.

The Jeanne Sauvé Global Project Accelerator is designed to empower Enactus teams with the resources needed to modify or expand existing projects to have an impact outside of Canada, in partnership with an Enactus team in another country.

The Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.

ABOUT JEANNE SAUVE

Jeanne Sauvé made history when, in 1984, she became Canada’s first female Governor General, the representative Head of State for Canada and Commander-in-Chief. She was the 23rd Governor General and the sixth Canadian to hold the vice-regal office. As the three primary themes of her mandate, she chose national unity, peace and youth and advocated tirelessly on these issues throughout the course of her vice-regal duties. During her tenure Madame Sauvé traveled extensively throughout all regions of the country meeting and talking with Canadians; she served as patron to numerous national non-governmental organizations; undertook state visits to foreign countries; received thousands of Canadians at functions at her official residence, Rideau Hall; and through hundreds of speeches and events, celebrated all that is essentially worthy and noble across the nation. As the end of her tenure drew near, Madame Sauvé established a Foundation which would foster similar leadership opportunities for young people and establish networks of national and international association for generations to come.
