(TORONTOMay 10 2021: A group of students from Memorial University of Newfoundland created HeartStarter – an initiative that aims to provide health services using drone-powered AED delivery and information to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador though a publicly accessible AED registry that is connected with the 911 provincial system.

The Enactus team from Memorial University of Newfoundland was awarded the 2021 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Project Accelerator Best Project title at the 2021 Enactus Canada National Exposition Opening Ceremony on May 10th.

HeartStarter has carried through with education sessions that have benefitted over 1000 students in 41 classrooms across 4 provinces. They have directly impacted over 1600 people, and over 3650 people have now downloaded the PulsePoint AED app. This year they launched their pilot in the town of Holyrood where 2500 residents have benefitted from the project.

“At Samsung, we believe in empowering future generations to achieve their full potential, enabling them to pioneer positive social change and build a better world. We are inspired by what these students have accomplished and how they have embraced technology as a force for good,” said Jennifer Groh, Director of Corporate Communications and Citizenship, Samsung Canada.

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Project Accelerator is designed to empower Enactus teams with the resources needed to identify, create and deliver innovative projects that show how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can be applied to improve local communities and build a better tomorrow. The program doubles as a unique competition that encourages innovative thinking, creative problem-solving and teamwork by encouraging students to resolve the pressing social issues affecting their local community.

The Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
