(TORONTO) 25 May 2020: A group of students from Saint Mary’s University developed an app that tackles both food insecurity and food waste. The Square Roots Token program, which launched in 2017, enables Nova Scotian restaurants to offer $5 tokens that can be redeemed for a meal for someone in need. Now online, the program is easier for restauranteurs and consumers to manage, access and scale.

Enactus Saint Mary’s University has been awarded the 2020 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Project Accelerator Best Project award at the 2020 Virtual Enactus Canada National Exposition Opening Ceremony on May 22. Solve for Tomorrow is a unique competition that encourages innovative thinking, creative problem-solving and teamwork by encouraging students to resolve the pressing social issues affecting their local community.

Thanks to Enactus Saint Mary’s Square Roots Token app, over 2,000 people have been impacted including over 1,700 people who have new or improved access to information, communication and technology.

“At Samsung, we believe in empowering future generations to achieve their full potential, enabling them to pioneer positive social change and build a better world. We are inspired by what these students have accomplished and how they have embraced technology as a force for good,” said Jennifer Groh, Director of Corporate Communications and Citizenship, Samsung Canada.

New this year, the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Project Accelerator is designed to empower Enactus teams with the resources needed to identify, create and deliver innovative projects that show how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) can be applied to improve local communities and build a better tomorrow.

The Enactus Canada National Exposition unites 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition and education.
