(TORONTO, ON) May 15, 2024 – Students from the University of Ottawa have been named the 2024 Canadian Tire Environmental Sustainability Challenge National Champion. The winning team was selected by Canada’s largest experiential learning platform, Enactus Canada, and program supporter Canadian Tire Corporation.

Enactus University of Ottawa’s newest initiative, Innovape, repurposes lithium-ion batteries discarded e-cigarette products to create emergency charging devices to humanitarian organizations, university campuses, transit hubs, and more.

“Enactus students’ commitment to innovation and eco-conscious practices stands as a beacon of hope, proving that collective efforts can forge a sustainable future,” said Catherine Fowler, President and CEO of Enactus Canada. “They are leading the charge in ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for us all.”

“A heartfelt congratulations to our 2024 Environmental Sustainability National Champion, University of Ottawa, and all participants in this year’s Canadian Tire Environmental Sustainability Challenge,” said Susan O’Brien, Chief Brand & Customer Officer, Canadian Tire Corporation. “As leaders of tomorrow, these students embodied the innovation, resourcefulness, and problem-solving skills we need to help make life in Canada – and around the world – better. Their passion and dedication are truly commendable.

New this year, the Canadian Tire Environmental Sustainability Challenge empowers Enactus teams to identify, create, and deliver projects that tackle climate change through the concept of circularity while teaching and empowering others to do the same.

Earlier today, student teams demonstrated the impact of their environmental sustainability projects to panels of business executives at the Enactus Canada National Exposition, which started on May 15 and continues to May 16, in Toronto, Ontario.

The annual three-day event unites hundreds of delegates – including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals, and top Canadian CEOs to enable progress by supporting entrepreneurial action through competition, recognition, and education.
