Shelly: “My participation in Enactus has equipped me with the three most essential qualities: interpersonal skills, business intelligence, and leadership-oriented mindset."

Shelley Li spent the past summer learning and growing as a professional in the finance sector through an exciting and challenging internship with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

As a Finance and Marketing intern, Shelley supported two Ontario BDC business centers by providing financial and consulting services and participating in local marketing initiatives.

She provided quality customer service to BDC clients and assisted with financial statement analysis, loan administration and risk assessments. She also had the opportunity to job-shadow Account Managers and Consulting Managers at financial services client meetings and consulting meetings.

“I could not have asked for a more enriching internship opportunity than working with BDC to help entrepreneurs grow their small and medium-size businesses,” said Shelley. “Finance and entrepreneurship have always been my two passions, and my summer at BDC has given me the most excellent combination of the two.”

BDC’s primary goal of putting “Entrepreneurs First” was one that Shelley supported even prior to her time with the BDC team. This mindset was honed during her experience with Enactus, as were the many skills that prepared her for her internship.

“My participation in Enactus has definitely equipped me with the three most essential qualities required to excel in this role: interpersonal skills, business intelligence, and a leadership-oriented mindset,” said Shelly, President, Enactus York University. “I believe Enactus helps students develop the transferable skills necessary for any career path.”

In fact, it was being a member of Enactus York University and the Enactus Canada network that made this opportunity with BDC a reality for Shelley.

Shelley applied for the internship through the Talent Community, an exclusive job board for that brings together Enactus Canada’s corporate partners in need of skilled employees and top quality Enactus students looking for meaningful work placements.

Shelley encourages students to take advantage of the opportunities provided by Enactus Canada because “it provides Enactus students, like myself, with absolutely amazing career opportunities with Canada’s top employers, which are perfectly matched with our skills and interests.”
