VANCOUVER, BC (May 9, 2017) – The Enactus team from the College of the North Atlantic – St. John’s are preparing high school students in remote areas for the financial burdens that accompany post-secondary life through their Independent You project.

College of the North Atlantic – St. John’s has been awarded the 2017 Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership Best Project award by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud supporter Genworth Canada. The award presentation took place at the 2017 Enactus Canada National Exposition today in Vancouver.

The Independent You program first evaluates students’ financial literacy knowledge, then provides workshops focused on loans, credit, scholarships and bursaries. Participants are also taught how to record cash flows, budget and save. This year, Independent You has engaged 170 students across 19 different schools across Newfoundland.

“It’s inspiring to see how Enactus Canada empowers our next generation of leaders to drive economic, social and environmental change using limited financial resources and unlimited creativity and ideation” said Anita Booth, Director, Marketing and Community Relations of Genworth Canada. “Through the Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership, we hope to direct some of that innovative thinking towards improving financial literacy education for youth across Canada.”

The Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership was designed to empower student teams with the skills and resources to strengthen the financial well-being of youth in communities across Canada.

“Financial education is a growing issue across the country and we are proud to recognize the Enactus College of the North Atlantic – St. John’s team for their work to empower youth,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “With the support of corporate partners like Genworth Canada, our students can change lives for the better through financial education.

The Genworth Canada Financial Education Project Partnership Best Project was awarded at the 2017 Enactus Canada National Exposition, where more than 1,500 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs came together to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.
