From Fall River, a relatively small town in Nova Scotia, Thomas Wall has worked hard to stand out from the crowd and land a job with Canada’s fastest growing telecommunications company, TELUS.
Thomas always knew that he wanted to work in marketing, yet upon graduation from Queen’s University he found himself overwhelmed with options, companies and positions. When he heard about the TELUS Marketing Development Program through on-campus recruitment activities, Thomas knew that it was just what he wanted to do.
Through the TELUS Marketing Development Program, new graduates like Thomas are able to develop a well-rounded marketing skill-set through four six-month rotations.
“Being able to rotate between teams and projects has helped me figure out what I like, what I don’t like, as well as what my strengths are,” says Thomas. “I think it’s pretty powerful to get a good sense of these things early on in your career.”
After submitting his resume and cover letter, followed by an on-campus interview, Thomas had the opportunity to attend a Meet & Greet in Toronto with TELUS senior executives. Through networking and conversations, Thomas highlighted his skills and Enactus experience which led to a job offer he couldn’t refuse.
Through his time on the Enactus Queen’s University team, Thomas was afforded free reign to grow and develop a financial literacy project. He says that it was this kind of autonomy that helped him start his career with TELUS, where employees are encouraged to solve problems and work on projects they personally find important.
“TELUS is a company that provides challenging work, offers a lot of support and has an outstanding company culture – one that is hard to match,” says Thomas. “The people here are all very smart and hardworking, but we also have a lot of fun.”
Thomas knows first-hand that it’s not always easy to find a job and there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to help job seekers land a job. His final words of advice for graduating students are, “Don’t limit your applications and take advantage of all the career resources at your disposal, like the connections you can make through Enactus.”
