Memorial University of Newfoundland Team will represent Canada at Enactus World Cup 2017 in London, England
VANCOUVER, BC (May 12, 2017) – Memorial University of Newfoundland has been named 2017 Enactus National Champion by the country’s largest experiential learning platform, Enactus Canada, and a 60 person judging panel comprised of top Canadian CEOs, for their ability to enable social, environmental and economic progress through entrepreneurial action.
The Enactus team from Newfoundland launched a social enterprise that tackles fresh food accessibility in Canada’s far north. They designed an inexpensive hydroponic unit to help individuals grow fresh food in their own homes. They also partnered with a local charity to provide at-risk youth with jobs manufacturing the units. They sell their hydroponic units to the general public and the profits go toward subsidizing food grown in the north. In their first year, they’ve sold more than 300 units, launched 12 food sharing cooperatives, and have grown more than 100,000 pounds of produce.
“The Memorial University of Newfoundland team should be incredibly proud of the impact they’ve created in communities across Canada” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “We are eager to see them compete and represent Canada at the Enactus World Cup.”
Enactus Memorial University of Newfoundland competed against 60 other post-secondary institutions in three rounds of live presentation-based challenges. Each team had 17 minutes to showcase how their entrepreneurial projects advance the social, economic and environmental health of communities, create new career opportunities, spark business innovation and change lives.
The National Champion will now advance to represent Canada at the Enactus World Cup taking place in London, England September 26-28, 2017.
As a supporter of local Canadian youth, Tim Hortons proudly hosted the Final Round of Competition, and awarded Enactus Memorial with the honourable ‘Tim Hortons Cup’.
More than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top business leaders witnessed the crowning of the National Champion at the 2017 Enactus Canada National Exposition held in Vancouver.
