University of Calgary and Medicine Hat College Student Entrepreneurs Named Provincial Champions

CALGARY (February 26, 2013) – Kevin Davies, owner of Green Start Initiatives Ltd. and student at the University of Calgary, and Anthony Merkel, owner of Elevation Landscaping and student at Medicine Hat College, have both been named Alberta’s 2013 Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champions. Provincial Champions were named by national charitable organization, Enactus Canada and proud program supporter, the John Dobson Foundation as part of the Student Entrepreneur National Competition.

Davies received the title of Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champion because he is driven to shape design, sustainability and business, and he sees Green Start as the greatest possible outlet for these pursuits. Green Start is a recycling company that offers custom services to condos and offices around Calgary with a twist – it offers tracking, unique to each client, in the form of a monthly Impact Report.

Merkel was awarded the provincial prize because he is striving to make a difference in his community and enjoys working directly with his clients to realize their vision. Elevation Landscaping provides full-service landscaping services to customers throughout the greater Medicine Hat area. They help clients put their property’s best foot forward by providing world class service and unique landscapes.

Davies and Merkel will showcase their businesses and personal accomplishments as entrepreneurs at the Enactus Canada Regional Exposition – Western Canada in Calgary on March 8th, where they will compete for the title of Regional Champion.

“We are pleased to celebrate and support entrepreneurs like Kevin and Anthony across the country,” said Enactus Canada president Nicole Almond. “The entrepreneurial spirit is what built this country and we want to encourage this drive in other Canadian student entrepreneurs.”

Davies and Merkel will compete against each other as well as two additional Student Entrepreneur Provincial Champions from Western Canada for the regional title and the chance to move on to the 2013 Enactus Canada National Exposition in Toronto, Ontario taking place on May 8th. The National Champion will receive a $10,000 cash prize and represent Canada at the international level of competition, the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards.
